What is SLC, MLC, TLC flash chip particle?
Dec 27, 2023
Flash memory chips are divided into SLC, MLC, TLC, etc. according to the internal architecture, and flash memory particles are square bodies composed of multi-layer flash memory chips.
Flash chip particles directly affect the SSD access rate, service life, production cost and so on.
Single-Level Cell (SLC), 1bit/cell, single-layer storage, allowing only 1bit of information to be stored in a memory element.
MLC, English full name of Multi-Level Cell, 2bit/cell, multi-layer storage, allowing the storage of 2 bits of information in a memory element.
TLC, or Trinary-Level Cell, 3bit/cell, three-layer storage, allowing the storage of 3 bits of information ina memory element.
It can be concluded that when the particle area of flash memory is the same, the storage capacity grows from small to large: SLC< MLC< TLC.
Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of SLC, MLC and TLC flash memory chip particles
SLC, access rate is fast, can be erased more times (long service life), but the production cost is expensive (at least three times MLC).
MLC, the access rate is faster, the number of erasable times is less than SLC (the service life is about one-tenth of SLC), and the price is general.
TLC, the access rate is slow, the number of erasable times is further reduced (the service life is about one twentieth of SLC), and the price is relatively cheap.
