Main application fields of micro SD

Aug 29, 2022

Micro SD card is mainly used in mobile phones, and it is a must-have memory card for functional computers. 2GB is the standard matching capacity. In 2011, 1GB of micro SD card was still the mainstream, and it was basically replaced by 2GB in 2012. The mainstream original factory also stopped producing 8GB wafers, and only Lijing is still supplying. For manufacturers that need to bundle small capacity micro SD cards, they should find a balance in price, capacity and supply. When there is little difference in the price of micro SD card capacity increase, manufacturers tend to bundle 2GB or more high-capacity memory cards to improve customers' operating space and stimulate consumers to buy; For end consumers, if the price difference is not much, it will be easier to accept high-capacity products.

Since the rise of smart phones, the mobile phone market pattern has changed. In the first two years, smart phones were mainly positioned at the high end, and their share in the mobile phone market was not high because of the high price. However, since the mobile phone manufacturers began to promote smart phones in 2011, the market share of functional phones began to be eroded.

In terms of the storage capacity of smart phones, high-end smart phones promoted by international manufacturers such as apple, Samsung and HTC generally use 8GB / 16GB EMMC + 4GB lpddr II or above as memory, which is sufficient. However, if external storage is required, the demand for capacity will be even greater, at least above 4GB. Generally, Android operating system smartphones with a price of 1000 yuan or less mainly use 4GB SLC + 4GB lpddr I as embedded storage, and 2GB storage capacity is not enough.

Usually, installing a navigator on a mobile phone needs more than 1GB of capacity. If you add photos, music, videos and two high-definition movies, 2GB of storage is far from enough. A 720p high-definition movie already needs to occupy more than 1GB of flash memory. As an external storage of smart phones, 2GB flash cards are also stretched. Now mobile navigation is the standard application of smart phones. Obviously, for consumers who use smart phones, the built-in storage capacity can no longer meet their needs.

Flash memory card micro SD card can just make up for the problem of insufficient capacity. If it is only equipped with 2GB or less capacity, it can not solve the problem of small storage capacity at all. Only flash memory cards with higher capacity (4GB / 8GB) can meet the demand, so it is natural for consumers to transfer to high-capacity storage.

The capacity of the SD card equipped in the camera can no longer meet the needs of consumers. Generally, a 10 megapixel photo takes up about 4MB of space, and a 2GB memory card can only store 500 photos. It may be full after two days of travel. Therefore, consumers now have no highest requirements for storage capacity, only higher ones.

In addition, micro SD cards will also be used in low-cost tablet computers, MP3 / MP4, e-books, navigators and other terminal devices, but these devices have high or relatively narrow storage requirements. Basically, they will not use products with a capacity of less than 2GB, or they will not help the sales of 2GB products. Now tablet computers and MP4 need high-definition decoding. 1080p is already the standard decoding configuration, so 2GB storage capacity is far from enough.

Although 2GB capacity is about to be eliminated by the mainstream mobile storage market, it does not mean that 2GB will not have any market space for development immediately. Some low-capacity flash cards may also replace some non environmentally friendly and easily damaged storage media such as CDs and VCDs, which may be embodied in the form of system drivers, games, music albums, e-books and other content cards. However, these markets are sensitive to price and also depend on the original manufacturer's support for 2GB. However, 2GB micro SD cards will gradually disappear in the end.
